The Sun

Think about the concept of The Sun with me for a minute. A FLOATING BALL OF FIRE, that never goes out, so hot and wild, that we can all feel that heat from here. If you think of a candle, and how close you need to be to feel its heat. Now think of a fireplace, a bonfire… a few meters too far and you’ll miss it. However, The Sun, God knows how far it is.. well, and also scientists probably know too, probably more like definitely… anyway, besides the point. How strong do I feel it on my skin right now, sat on this random moor in Cornwall: sun straight on my face, direct into my eyes. It almost feels like it’s shinning just for me, sometimes I feel that way, I like thinking that way. It’s the spot where it sits right now, like it’s chosen it for me to have this view, of Tintagel Castle in the sunniest day October could possibly see. A gift for coming this way, for visiting.

General knowledge tells me that of course the Sun doesn’t shine just for me. It shines for others, for everyones in the world where there is daylightright now. It shines even through the clouds, giving us a diffused view, white feeling. And even in those days when the mist is too much and we can’t see or feel the Sun. We know that he still shines, proud, unconditional, to give us daylight, days, cycles- just like I know know that its shinning for others too.

I’ve heard the ancient stories and myths of the Sun Gods and how the cross the sky with their vehicles every day: Ra in his boat and Helios in a chariot. Same story, different civilization, and there’s probably others too. I can see it now, I totally understand. With 10 minutes of staring at the Sun, sat on this moor where I am, looking at the dome shaped sky.. one would easily get to that conclusion: that it travels in a flying chariot/boat (we could call it a plane), around the world. That there won’t be a day where it doesn’t rise. And if there is, well then we’re all fucked.
